DISCOVER YOUR NEW CAREER
Travel nursing is a type of nursing profession where healthcare professionals work on short-term assignments around the country. These assignments typically last around 13 weeks, although they can range from a few weeks to several months.
Travel nursing offers registered nurses (RNs) the opportunity to explore new places, gain diverse experiences, and earn higher salaries. Travel nursing has allowed me to work in Hawaii, USVI, Alaska, Texas, Florida, California, Illinois, Washington, New York, Cruise ships in Europe and the Caribbean.
The nature of travel nursing requires adapting to new environments and forming new relationships every few months, which can be challenging for some individuals. As assignments are temporary, travel nurses may face periods without work if there is a lack of available assignments in their preferred locations.
Getting accustomed to a new healthcare facility, staff, and protocols with each assignment requires adaptability and flexibility, so you'll need to be a flexible individual to pursue this career. The fast-paced nature of travel nursing can be physically and mentally demanding, requiring nurses to be resilient and self-care oriented.
Not having a consistent workplace and team may result in a lack of professional and personal connections, so this type of nursing career is really well-suited to independent individuals.
I've been a travel nurse 6 years and counting. My work has allowed me to work in all these amazing places, which allowed me to explore on my time off and live a true adventure. I take time off between my contracts to explore solo or with my tribe of female travelers.
